Vertical videos may share a 9:16 frame, but each platform places navigation, captions and engagement controls in different areas. Preview those interfaces before export.

What is a vertical video safe zone?

A safe zone is the part of a 9:16 video that remains clear enough for essential content after the platform adds its interface. The video may fill the whole screen, but buttons, usernames, captions, navigation and audio labels sit above the image.

Safe zones are not permanent universal pixel measurements. Platform interfaces can change by device, account, region or app update. A reliable workflow previews the actual platform layout and keeps important content away from crowded edges.

CORE RULE

Treat faces, captions, logos, prices and calls to action as essential. Decorative backgrounds may extend to the edge; essential information should not.

Where each interface competes for space

Instagram ReelsThe top area carries navigation, the right edge holds engagement actions and the lower area includes the account, caption and audio information. Keep important text away from the lower-right corner.
YouTube ShortsTop controls, a right-side action rail and lower channel, subscribe, title and progress elements can cover the video. Check long titles and lower-third graphics carefully.
TikTokThe top feed navigation, right-side interaction stack and lower username, caption and audio area use a large share of the frame. Keep calls to action away from the right and bottom edges.

Content that deserves extra protection

Captions and subtitles

Use short lines, readable contrast and enough distance from the bottom interface. Review every caption change instead of checking only the first frame.

Faces and product details

Keep eyes, faces, product names and important controls inside the central composition. If a subject moves, check the full motion path against the interface.

Logos and calls to action

A logo may remain visible while a smaller price, website address or “buy now” message becomes difficult to read. Give conversion-focused elements more space than decorative branding.

Progress bars and lower thirds

Thin lines and lower-third graphics are especially easy to cover with captions, audio labels or playback progress. Move them upward or simplify them for vertical delivery.

A safe-zone review before export

Enable the Reels preview

Check the entire edit, paying special attention to the right controls and the lower caption area.

Switch to YouTube Shorts

Review channel, subscribe and title areas without moving or rebuilding the platform guide.

Switch to TikTok

Check the right action stack and bottom metadata area, especially on frames with captions or product text.

Make one composition work everywhere

Choose positions that remain readable across all three previews, or create platform-specific timeline versions when the layout needs more precision.

  • Preview the opening hook and final call to action on every platform.
  • Scrub through animated captions and moving subjects.
  • Inspect on a phone-sized screen, not only a large desktop viewer.
  • Recheck platform interfaces periodically because apps evolve.
